The Animals I Met in Mexico

Sarah on Activities - Fri, February 29 2008

I was on a cruise last week and we made two stops in Mexico: a small, fishing village called Progreso and the more touristy Cozumel.

Progreso is a poor little town and I was amazed by the packs of dogs hanging out in vacant lots. I have seen feral cat clans in my neighborhood but it was weird seeing dogs. It didn't look like they were starving for food, but I wondered if they were starving for a family. Then, I thought in this small little town, I bet the entire town was their family. It was just something very different to witness.

Then in Cozumel, I got to swim and interact with dolphins. And, while an expensive excursion, I highly recommend doing it if you ever have the opportunity. While I was not afraid of them, I was afraid of getting hit with their tail. However, they are very gentle. They also did not feel like I expected. I thought they would feel slimy, but they actually felt like soft rubber. I guess they skin rejuvenates every two hours ... I'm jealous. One of them pulled me through the water and it was amazing till I got a gulp of salt water!

I lived about an hour south of Progreso a few years ago, and what you're describing is pretty typical of pet ownership in the Yucatan. You won't see too many stray cats around, but lots of dogs. The community cares for them, and often leaves food for them - they're seen as pets for the entire community. It is quite different, though, as there aren't many yards, and pets aren't as spoiled as they are in the U.S., for the most part - though the very wealthy are a different story altogether.

I won't get on a soapbox about swimming with dolphins, as I know it's popular, but beware of the implications this leaves for these animals. It's similar to swimming with sharks - these animals are taken away from their natural environments, and aren't always treated well when they're not "performing" with humans. Just something to keep in mind.
