good quality, economic dog food??

Zoe♥Lewis on Nutrition - Thu, February 28 2008

Our parents have decided to foster another dog! They are responsible for buying the dog food for the foster dog. We are on a VERY expensive dog food, because of Lewis' tummy problems. My parents really don't want to buy and feed the same food to the foster dog, so they are looking for recommendations of a good dog food at a low cost! Any recommendations will be helpful! Thanks, woof woof...Zoe & Lewis

Congratulations on fostering! We are getting our 1st foster next weekend and mom is really excited. Anyway....we eat Diamond Naturals Large Breed and it is a higher quality less expensive food. Mom and dad did lots of research before switching us from Science Diet and actually found that Diamond is a better quality food. We live near Lafayette so mom get our food at the local farm store for about $20 for a 40 pound bag. I think I read another post saying your could find it in Indy at Pet Supplies Plus? Good Luck and let us know what find of foster sibling you get. We are getting a Great Pyrenees foster.

Congrats on the decision to foster! We love it although sometimes it can be frustrating(like with certain little Doxies that only want to potty in the house). I'm not sure what food the other dogs are on but Canidae is an excellent choice. It is very high quality but the price is very reasonable. We get ours at Wipe Your Pawz at 56th and Lafayette but I've seen it at Pet Supplies Plus as well. Here is a great website to check out your dog's food. www.dogfoodanalysis.com It is pretty surprising when you see how some brands that people consider good food only rates 2 or 3 stars on this site. The Canidae all life stages is good for all age or breed of dogs. They make special formulas for older dogs or those with allergies to chicken. Our dogs love it! It is pretty high calorie but they eat less and poop less. Just don't let them free feed or you'll have an enormous dog:-)

Also, check out Costco's Kirkland Food--I think it's related to Diamond actually, but made in Canada. Anyway, I know a lot of breeders that use it because it's good and so affordable. $15 or $16 for a 40lb bag, but you have to have a membership of course.

It would depend on what you consider really expensive. I was always under the impression that the cheaper "grocery store" type foods are no good. Iams might be a good option because I know Wal-Mart sells it. Plus, I do know that sometimes grocery store foods seem reasonable priced, but they aren't really. They are full of fillers and your dog ends up having to eat more, whereas with a more premium dog food they eat and poop less. But regardless of what you do, you are still giving this dog a chance it might not have had otherwise.

I have heard very good thing about Kirkland's from Costco.

Also, I fed my dogs Premium Edge (Pets Supplies Plus has it). It was very reasonably priced for a decent food.
