Pitt Bull questions

Myra on Activities - Sun, February 24 2008

O.k let me start by saying that I am not posting this to upset anyone I just have some question that I need answered and I know that there are several of you who are Pitt Bull owners. As I think that they are very cute dogs I am very lery about being around them because of the cases where they have biten for no known reason and for animal specialests saying that their jaws lock shut because they are breed for fighting.Id like to know if Pitt Bulls are known to turn on their owners, friends, or family out of no where? Is there certain things that you have to be careful not to do around them like sudden movements or noises?Any information or advice that any one has for me would be great!Thanks-

I'm far from an expert but you really need to read up on pitbulls from reliable educated sources here are a few to start out with:

Hey Lynn,

It really depends on the dog and owner. My son has raised Pit Bulls for a number of years. He also raises my grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, and the nieghborhood kids around them because they are brought up with love and kindness.

I am not an expert and in no way am I giving you advice. As an owner of an American Pit Bull Terrier I have to say that with my personal dog I have only known loving, silly, and gentle behaviors from her. Any dog that is abused or neglected could possibly attack or become aggressive and this goes for any breed. A lot of what you hear and see on the news about Pit Bulls are due to irresponsible owners. As Lynn suggested you should go to those websites for more information.

I have never owned a pit bull but the ones I do know are rescued from fighting rings and are a sweet as can be. The one male is afraid of our doxie puppy!! Go figure. Any dog can "turn" on it's owner for whatever reason, usually something medically wrong. Kirby and Hoover, my corgis, both have agressive streaks in them and they're not "a bully breed". Go to http://indypitcrew.org/ and read all about these misunderstood dogs. You are doing the right thing by asking for answers rather than going on others' opnions. Have fun on Indy Pit Crew's website!

hi myra, this site will give you lost of "real" info about the breed, and what to expect, and NOT to expect. http://www.realpitbull.com/history.html
typically, they do NOT turn on their owners, they are generally a very happy, people friendly breed, and their jaws do NOT lock, that is just an urban legend. (that link will give you great info on the breed) when this breed was in it's earlier years, they were bred SPECIFICALLY not to be human biters, as the old time dogmen wanted to be able to pull their bulldogs off the other it was fighting. if they were human biters, they would not have been able to do that. they generally did not breed the ones who tried to bite humans, as this was not a desirable trait in the breed, for what it was bred for. now, they will, and can be very animal aggressive. (many terriers can be, not just APBT's!)here are a couple more good links with helpful, and real info. i'm glad you asked, and didn't just believe all the myths. ;o)
