UPDATE! Some advice Please!!

Teri on Health - Sun, February 24 2008

Remus is drooling excessively. He soaked the bed last night. I keep drying his mouth and neck off to no avail. I’ve been up doing research and everything I find requires a trip to the emergency Vet. He is only a year and a half so I don’t think it’s gum disease. I bought Loki a hard plastic chew toy yesterday because he’s an aggressive chewer and Remus chewed on it some. I’ve tried to pry open his mouth to see if he has something stuck but he can be pretty stubborn. Am I overreacting? Can I wait and take him tomorrow to his Vet or should I take him to emergency today? He is eating and drinking and doesn't act sick.

I would try checking his mouth again. He may have a tiny piece of plastic caught in a tooth somewhere. I would wait until tomorrow to take him to the vet if he is eating and drinking but keep an close eye on him for any blood or if he starts to act funny. I know our beagles like to chew on tree branches and I don't let them do that.
I had a dog that got one caught in his mouth. It really scared me.

Maybe I'm weird, but I'd rather pay $80 to hear I'm a paranoid mom than to wait and have to fork over even more $$ to have something fixed because I waited too long. If nothing else... CALL the E-Vet, describe what has been going on and hear what they have to say. The call is free...

That's what I'd do because honestly, it sounds minor. Diane is probably right, plastic is stuck in the tooth or something. Good luck!

I called 2 different E-Vets. The first one said to bring him in right away. The second one asked questions and told me to check his mouth and the color of his gums and what to look for. The color of his gums are fine. I think he's got something stuck but he won't let me stick my hand in his mouth. I'm so confused!!
I'm going to keep trying but I'll probably end up taking him to emergency.

I'd agree with others -- rather chance $80 on Evet than $ on surgery or worse... if it were my girls, we'd already be in the car

I took him to the Emergency. They took x-rays and sedated him to do an oral exam. They couldn't find anything. They said something about acid reflux and gave him pepcid. They also gave him a shot to dry up his saliva glands for a few hours. It was a bit more than $80, but worth the peace of mind. Thank you!!

It could be that he's really sore from chewing, so he didn't want to open his mouth. But I hope the meds work!

Hoover has had acid reflux problems and did take Pepcid for a while. This could certainly be a reason for Remus' salivating. Good luck!
