purchasing RX meds online...

Lynn on Health - Sat, February 23 2008

Regina was put on 5mg dose of Prednisone twice a day last Monday. It's made a world of difference so I'm going to keep her on it as long as the vet feels its needed. My issue is that our vet is charging $13 for a week of medication when I'm finding it a good deal cheaper online or even at my local CVS=$10 for a month supply. I have never had a pet that needed to be on meds longterm before. One vet years ago yelled at me and told me that I was a horrible pet parent because I wanted a prescription for heartworm preventative so that I could purchase it elsewhere not wanting to pay his inflated prices. He told me that all those online places aren't legal and don't handle/store the medicine properly or are selling expired meds. Is this true? Has anyone had experince buying medicines online and if so where did you buy from and did you receive good service? The bottomline is that no matter the price Regina wil be getting her medicine. I'm just wondering if there are other viable options out there when it comes to finding quality RX medications. xoxoxo Lynn

You can absolutely get it at a local pharmacy. Mom had the vet call in some meds for me once. Then the person working there though mom was crazy for naming her child Blitzen! We haven't bought any meds from the online services so we're no help there. You can ask your vet for generic heartworm. It's waaaaaayyy cheaper because you're not paying for advertising or fancy boxes.

We get our dogs prescription meds from Drs. Foster and Smith online. We've had no problems in the 5 years we've used them. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/shop.cfm?c=9547
They have veterinarians working on the other end to verify the orders. Our vet has been very good about writing a script for us to send into Fosters and Smith but we also have had good results with the Customer Service people calling the vet to get a faxed script when we ran out of refills. You can just check out some of their prices...our dogs take Prednisone, Prednisone eye drops, Amoxicillin, Percorten-V, and Allopurinol.

Good luck. PS: I've heard that Indiana is one of the states that won't let vets write scripts for heartworm meds. Not sure about that; we've never tried.

We get our heartworm meds filled from Drs Foster and Smith. I just had my vet write a script to allow for generic and it's so much cheaper. They also have excellent customer service like was already mentioned. If your vet won't write you a script to fill somewhere else, I would change vets. That's obsurd.

Do you need a prescription from the vet to buy flea products the vet sells online?

You don't for plain Advantage or Frontline, but some of the other flea stuff (like Advantage-Multi and Revolution) you do. At least that's how it was last year. Drs. Foster and Smith online just had a sale on Advantage ($48 for 6mo supply), so I stocked up for my critters.
