Regina's not in good shape

memorial to Regina on My Blog - Thu, February 07 2008

Regina is my almost 18yr old Russian Blue. She's lost almost 5lbs in the last eight months, her appetite is starting to wane, she's recently developed a growth under her chin, she's vomitting usually once a day for the last few days and yesterday I found a bloody poop in the litterbox. We have a vet appt. tomorrow morning and I'm having a geriatric panel done. I'm the type of person that likes to brace for the worst but hope for the best. I know that there are other furparents out there who have gone thru this, what am I looking at here? I'm expecting anything from diabetes to Leukemia to renal failure. If it's something like diabetes then I will treat her condition. If it's cancer or renal failure I will be saying goodbye to my gray baby. I can't bring myself to make her waste her last little bit of time here surrounded by strangers in some hospital in the name of trying to buy a few more months because at her age that's what it'd amount to. Thank you for any light that you can shed on this situation, Lynn

I love the Russian Blue. Yes, she is at a good age. I would not let her suffer. I wish you luck on the vet appt. Please, keep us informed.

I'm so sorry you have to make that decision. It sounds like she has had a good long life with you and that's something to be happy about. I think you need to consider what's best for her. The poor dear has lost almost half her weight, vomiting, and can't eat much. I always think about quality of life. Does she still seem to enjoy the things she has in the past? Can she still get around ok? Does she seem to be in pain? I agree with you about not treating cancer or renal failure at her age. You don't want her last memories to be the vet's office and needles. Please let us know how the vet's visit went. You're in our thoughts and prayers.

Thank you both for you kind words. The blood work came back much better than any of us expected. No signs of diabetes, cancer or renal failure. Her pancreatic enzymes were twice as high as they should be. We are going back here in a couple weeks to investigate this further. The vet trip just to get the blood work done was traumatic enough, so she gets a few weeks to recover. The ornery lil monster scratched the vet and bit the vet tech before they could even get a weight or temp. They had to sedate her to collect a sample and even then she was still fighting. this just confirms my thoughts that heaven doesn't want her and hell's afraid :) But she's my crancky lil monster and I'm glad to have her for as long as I can. The bloody stool was attributed to impacted anal sacs and the vomiting has stopped. She has no issues getting around and she attacked her sleeping brother (Jordan) this morning to start a game of tag, so I think she still has some life left in her. Thanks again, Lynn
