dog town.....

Hound Girl on Breeds - Thu, January 17 2008

did anyone watch this new show on nat'l geographic channel? myself and a few other people were discussing this show, and what they do. while i am ALL FOR rehabbing a dog that has had a rough start, i just kind of have a problem with this, too. you see all the dogs that they are spending tons of $$ and resources on, for months and months, because they have serious illnesses that need addressed, or major temperament problems, or are serious BITERS, etc, i just do not agree with this. why is there people out there that will spend sooo much money, or volunteer soooo much time and resources, on a dog that needs to basically be in a special home, because it's a psycho.plus, who is to say that dog isn't going to revert to it's old ways once the rescuer is not taking care of it anymore?? i don't get that??? all the time spent on that one dog...just imagine all the really GREAT, WONDERFUL, FRIENDLY dogs that were killed in shelters during that time!!! i do hope this does not offend anyone, but we just cannot save them all. why not spend the time and money saving the ones who CAN be saved??? so many with major issues will have so much time spent, and in the end, they could not be saved. it just breaks my heart to know how many great animals died, and were never saved, but yet dogs who were just never cut out to be pets, were. i just don't get it. i can see going to these great lengths if there was a shortage of pet dogs in the world, but we know that will never happen. i mean, minor health issues, that is not a big deal, but those type that are so mean, who have never been socialized, who basically life is painful for...why save those? ::sigh:: i could think of better things spend money on for animals in need..........

I don't get this channel but I wish I did. From what you said, I agree with you. There are too many nice loving dogs put to sleep. Money should not be spent on high risk dogs.

I haven't watched it but it sounds like the show would kind of make me mad. I totally agree with you.

I watched it for a short period of time. These animals were in such bad shape and had such serious problems that I found it really sad and hard to watch. I would rather just change the channel then have to see that. I guess that is sort of in denial, but it just makes me too sad to see these poor animals. I could never work at a place like that.

I understand what you're saying. I'll probably get some crap for this, but I'm going to say it anyway. I feel the same way about people.

There is a rescue here in town that does the same thing. I could never understand spending thousands(truly!)on a stray tiny kitten that probably wasn't going to make it anyway(he didn't). There are so many other healthy deserving animals that could have been helped with that $$. I don't think you can just write off a dog that hasn't been socialized but I think you should try to spend your $$$ wisely. I doubt that the people that donated to that rescue would have wanted all that $ spent on that kitten when it could have helped so many other animals. I think some rescue groups get caught up in saving all of them and it's just not possible right now.

Maybe it's a good thing I don't get that channel. I tend to agree with Hound Girl and Dachsaholic about being more prudent about how money is spent.

I'm also in agreement with Hound Girl...you MUST put the most adoptable dogs first...sounds unfair to some, but it's the truth. These dogs on this show (I've only seen previews and have decided not to watch it because I know it will just make me mad) are not what I'd want to adopt for the most part. I have no problem with treating medical illnesses, amputees, etc...I'm not a fan of putting poorly socialized, risky behavior, biting dogs into a new household...SORRY, BUT I JUST CAN'T DO IT. Like I always say, give me the diabetic, hypothyroid, 3 legged dog, over the moderate resource guarder who has a bite history. That's just the way I feel--and yes, in the right home, some of these dogs can be rehabiliated to an extent and managed under careful supervision, but there are so many liabilities and lawsuits today, that it's not worth the risk to me. We need to focus the money on dogs that are heartworm positive, lost a leg, have a managable medical condition, etc...not dogs that are likely to revert back to old behavior and likely get euthanized later on.

i sooo agree with you!!! whew, i was hoping people would not think i was being heartless, in thinking this way. this show is on tonight, i think it's after the dog whisperer, on national geographic. i think it comes on at 9pm. i'm going to watch for it, and will have my "review" of it later on this evening. maybe i can become the new "animal show" critic for this site, haha. ;o)
