Calling all fish owners how long do you guys leave on your filters?

Well when mom had fish, the filters were on all the time. Are you wondering how often you should change the filter pad? Mom would just wait until the filter pad was almost completely covered in "gunk" and then change it. The timeline always depended on how many fish she had and what kind they were.

I have both an outdoor koi pond and a small tank of platies in my office. The filters should always be on. Whenever the water starts to run slow I change it. However, if you are keeping really delicate fish you may wish to change the filters more often. My fish are all extremely hardy and can stand a little more inbalance than other types.

AJ is just gold fish and i was just wondering becuase i don't like leaving his fliter on for a long time becuase i'm afread he'l get tired fighting it.
I know the fliter is not to strong for him though! Aj's cage is not that big so i just don't want to tire him i was just wondering like if you leave it on all the time or have times that its on and off!
