Not Just a UTI: Need Surgery

Petey on My Blog - Sun, January 13 2008

I know there has been a lot of discussion about UTI's lately because Freckles has had a hard time with them.

Well today Petey finished his antibiotics for his UTI. He has been taking Cephalexin since 12/27. I thought he was getting better as I had not noticed anything strange in a while. But wouldn't you know ... today I found a small urine spot on my carpet with a little blood.

I have to take a urine sample into the vet tomorrow and have some tests run. I hope he does not have stones. Wish us luck!

Update: 1/15/08

Well I took Petey to the vet this morning and they took some X-Rays. He does not have just have a urinary tract infection. He has a bladder stone that can only be removed via surgery. So he is going in tomorrow morning for the procedure. They said this is odd for a dog of his young age.

My poor baby ... and my poor pocket book. It is going to cost in the ball park of $700. I look at it this way, it is a surgery that will solve the problem and make him healthy. I am thankful it is not a situation where I pay the money and he may or may not get better.

I am nervous because the vet said it will get worse before it gets better. Petey will still have blood in his urine and have potty accidents because of the surgery. Wish us luck!

1/21/08:

Petey had his surgery and seems to be doing ok. He has a lot of bruising and is tinkling on the floor with some blood. But the vet said this is normal. They are sending his bladder stone to the lab to see if they can determine the cause. I hope so because this was not a cheap surgery and I can't afford to have it happen again.

Good luck, Petey and Mom! Been there. Done that. I have started Freckles on chewable Vitamin C. She enjoys it, so we'll see. Keep us posted.

that happened with mikey when he had the bad UTI. my vet put him on a double dose of a stronger antibiotic, and he took it for 20 days, instead of ten. (or was it 28, instead of 14?) anyhow, that cleared it up, and we have been giving cranberry supplements, and vitamin C every day ever since. knock on wood, he's not had a problem in a few years! i hope everything is ok with petey, please keep us posted, ok?

Good luck! If you have crystals, chances are antibiotics aren't going to do much except mask symptoms. If you just have an infection, it sounds like you need a stronger/longer dosage. Gunner had struvite crystals for six months before we finally found something that's working for the time being. He's on Solid Gold Berry Balance, along with a vitamin C pill and distilled water. It's been two weeks with the Berry Balance, and no leaking! I hope you can get better soon!

I took Petey's urine sample into the vet this morning. (Yes, I got pee on me ... gross.) This afternoon I got a call from the vet saying that his red blood cell count is still high. So he has to spend the day at the vet tomorrow. I guess they are taking another urine sample and are going to have the lab grow the bacteria so they can determine a better antibiotic. As far as the Vitamin C and cranberry supplements go, are they meant for humans, where do you get them, what dosage would I give him?

We give Gunner the vitamin C from the grocery store. He gets one pill a day. The dosage isn't too important, because vitamin C is water soluble, so the body flushes out what it doesn't use. Of course, I wouldn't overload, but one pill should be plenty. I'd run it by your vet first, but I doubt there'll be a problem. It certainly can't hurt! Good luck tomorrow, Petey.

I'll miss you my dear brother. But now I'll get all of mom's attention while you're at the vet.
