Mom Needs Some Advice

Riley Coyote on Behavior - Sat, January 05 2008

Okay, I went to our local vet here in Alex City, AL for my shots and a checkup! Mom was livid after we left....the vet was a Frigid B*&ch and her Tech was even WORSE!

Mom and Dad tried to tell them that I needed to be on the floor and one of them holding me. But the Tech moved right in and put me in a Choke hold! I was traumatized! How do I let my vet know the next time I come in there (if I do) that they don't need a Vet Tech in there and mom or dad can handle me! I have to go in for some blood work and mom is stressing! She told Dad that he was going to have to take me in, cause if she goes with me she's going to wind up in jail...it was all she could take not to punch out the Vet Tech who was choking me out while the Vet worked on me!

How do we schedule an appointment and tell them NO CHOKE HOLD VET TECHS!

I would just tell them in a nice way that Riley does better when held by you and your husband. You would appreciate it if the Vet Techs didn't hold him. Make this request when you call for an appointment and then remind them once you get there. I would try to be very calm for Riley. He may get upset if he sees you upset. Good luck.

Get a new vet...didn't this happen the last time you went to that vet as well? I would definitely call the vet and discuss your reservations regarding Riley's treatment and if you don't get a satisfactory response I'd start looking for a new vet.

I would go with your gut. I had a personal doctor that I went to for a year. I didn't like him, never felt comfortable, but kept going to him. Only when he canceled my appointment and didn't tell me (I took a day off of work), did I find a new doctor. It was the best decision ever. We tend to keep going to people because we don't want to offend them, but if your gut is telling you something is not right, then it usually is true.

I'd go to another vet, too. BUT our vet, for insurance purposes, won't let any of us touch/hold our babies when getting shots or bloodwork done. SHOULD something happen and the dog bite the owners, the vet is liable for this and risks being sued. I know, this is stupid and if you vet was being rude about it, I'd find another vet. Ours is very loving and I'm fine with their policy.

Mama's really peeved by this. She says she'd find a new vet.

New Vet. If you told them how Riley needed to be handled, they should have respected your requested and the fact that you know your dog better than anyone else. Poor Riley. Hope everything is okay now.

Well, I called the vet to schedule another blood work on Riley for his Thyroid since he's been on his pills. I told them that I didn't want the Tech in there except to do leg work for the vet...well, I was told in no uncertain words that the Vet Tech would be holding Riley and of course I said a a few choice words and now I am trying desperately to get his files as I am going to another vet here in Alex City. If I'm not happy with them, I will try the one in Dadeville which is about 15 minutes down the road. Joe, we are in Central Alabama, in between Birmingham and Montgomery. Gulf Shores is a long way from us, but I appreciate the thought. We have had Riley to our vet back in Indiana since he was a baby and we have always held him for shots, thermometers up the butt and yes Blood draws and he has never flinched or cried out. This last visit he was screaming and jerking around and I thought he was going to have a heart attack there in the exam room! It broke my heart for him and also putting me in a killing mood! When my husband tried to tell the Tech to let him hold him these were her exact words..."Back off, you are ALL UP IN MY FACE!" It wasn't Riley my husband was holding then, it was me to keep me from bouncing her head off the wall! I was appalled that she said that and the way they were treating Riley! Later, the vet was just so Holdrum, like she really didn't care...it was just money for her. I guess I'm used to our Vet back in Shelbyville...he really cared about his clients and their animals. And when we asked to hold them, he let us and after taking 6 dogs to him, he has never been bit by one of them while we were holding them. Thanks for all your concern, I've finally decided to try the other vet! I'm going Monday to see if I can talk to them before taking Riley in for Bloodwork. If they have the same policy then I'll try the one in Dadeville! I can't put him through that trama again!
