Tear Stains

Waylon Alan on Grooming - Tue, January 01 2008

My eyes leak-alot. We have tried Benadryl to stop it but it only seems to make me sleepy. The vet says that is just the way I am.

Mom wanted to know if anyone knows of anything or has any suggestions of something I can take or can be added to my food that might make my leaky tears not stain my face so much. Mom tries to keep them wiped off, eventhough I hate that. She also knows there are products on the market that can help remove the staining.

Good ole' peroxide will do this, be VERY careful not to get it into the dogs eyes. Use a Q-Tip to apply it to the stained area 1-2 times and day.

What she is looking for is something that will make the tears not stain my hair. You know, treat the problem from the inside. When she used to groom an old groomer lady said antacids given everyday will stop it. I will eat just about anything so she has started that but wanted to know if anyone had any luck with anything.

Thanks for your suggestions!

there is a product called ANGEL EYES that several of my clients with white dogs have used, and it really works. it's some kind of powder you put in their food. check the label of the food you feed, because if it has any artificial colors, preservatives, or beet pulp, this will cause the staining, too.

I have the same problem if mommy doesn't give me bottled water. She read somewhere that suggested trying giving bottled water to pets to help out with the staining and I am doing great! It really does help, my eyes get worse when I am at my grandma's house if mommy doesn't take my water!! Give it a try!!
