DOES DRINKING WATER HELP?

Nadji on Health - Fri, December 21 2007

Mom here: I've been wondering if a dog that has a habit of drinking a lot of water during it's lifetime is less likely to develop kidney failure. My 16 yr. old Basenji does not have it but her 13 yr. old daughter does. Jessica (oldest) has always drank a lot of water & Diva never has been a big drinker even in the hot weather. Does anyone have any info or ideas on this?

Good question.. Hoover drinks a ton, but all at once, not troughout the day. Kirby drinks a "normal" amount... I wonder. Neither one of them have kidney issues.

I drink so much water, sometimes I throw it all back up. I'm kinda gross. My mom hopes I never get kidney failure. I hope Diva is ok.

It would make sense to me. Flush the little kidney. Mommy's twin sister got a very bad kidney disease when she was only 9. She was in the hospital a very long time. They thought she may die. She was ordered to drink a quart of water three times a day. HMMM!

from what i have been told by a few vets, yes, this does help. when i was having issues with a cat that had kidney problems, they said to feed more canned food,(to get more water in their systems) because cats are not big drinkers. so this is why they get kidney or UTI problems so much, because the urine is not getting flushed out enough, and bacteria builds up, causing infections or crystals.

Good thing you said that this has been a life-long habit. If it had just recently started, your mom might be concerned about the dog developing canine diabetes.

Good thing we have our own glasses of water in Mom's bedroom to drink from. Thanks Nadji's Mom!

I'm not sure if the kidney failure would be completely prevented or caused due to water consumption, but drinking plenty of water is a great way to keep your body functioning properly. Humans and pets should make sure they drink plenty of water throughout the day, it prevents illness and will overall make you feel more healthy. I bought Hannah and Zoey a pet fountain for Christmas the cycles and purifies the water, I have friends who have these and claim their pets began drinking more water with this fountain. After I put it up after Christmas, I'll let you know if I notice any difference in their drinking habits.
