Purebred Cats

Zoey on Breeds - Mon, December 17 2007

I know some people want to rescue a purebred cat, but there are few purebreds in local shelters and few purebred cat rescues in this area. I think this leads to a lot of purebred cat lovers buying from breeders because they cannot find their breed of choice in a shelter or rescue.

So if you're thinking about a fluffy persian, munchkin, ocicat, manx, siamese, etc., be sure to check out www.purebredcatrescue.org. Zoey came from this rescue and they do wonderful work with these special breeds. The cats cost about $150, but they receive the same spay/neuter, vaccinations, FIV/leukemia testing plus specialized care according to their breed. They're placed in foster homes, so their foster moms and dads can tell you everything you need to know and what to expect. The foster homes are located in Illinois and Wisconsin, so not too far away.

I have a confession to make. Up until I was in high school, I didn't know that there were specific cat breeds! LOL! I thought they were "just cats"! I've learned a bunch since then!

Me too Cookie! I mean, the only cats I had ever known were just regular tom cats, with either short or long hair. I think it is silly to pay any money for a cat, considering how many are stray on the streets. If you want a new kitty, just walk outside your house. I'm sure you'll find one close by!

Seth, even if you pick up a stray cat off the street you will still have to pay for the spay/neuter, vaccinations, blood test, etc. You won't know what diseases that animal is carrying and that could be bad news if you already have animals in your home. So if you adopt a cat, you have peace of mind that some health history of the animal is known and the adoption fee is usually less than having all that work done on your own. Special breed and regular cats are all great, we just wanted people to know that there are good options out there for adopting a purebred cat.

Ahem....I hear you talking about me! I'm an ocicat, from a (icky) breeder...rescued through CatsHaven. I cost UNDER $100. with spay, shots, vet checks, etc. And I'm one fabulous kitty! Barb at CatsHaven is the #1 Cat Lady...give her a call!
