HEARTWORMS

Barney on Behavior - Wed, December 12 2007

Mom just got a call from IVEC about my bloodwork for the blood donor program....I have heartworms!!!! Mom thought they tested me before I had surgery on my leg in May, but it was just regular blood work. They told her it would be around $1000 to treat me there.....yikes! She has called our regular vet and he will get back to her after he sees IVEC's lab results. Mom is so upset she could throw up!! She already has a care credit card, so the interest rate would be like 18 percent if she puts anything on it now....no introductory period low interest payments!!!

Oh no! I had those once. It wasn't any fun. Do you take a heartworm pill every month and do you get it from your vet? If the answer to both of those questions is yes, then, according to our vet, the makers of your medicine should cover all costs including the follow up visits.

Hey mom has a care credit card too, but when ever she adds a new balance to it they let her choose how long her pay back period is and if it gets paid off within a year theres no charge. I'm sorry to hear you have heartworm, I hope your treatment goes well. Goodluck!

Oh gosh! That's scary! Are you taking a heartworm preventative? If you are you need to make sure THEY pay for your treatment. We all take one every month and they're yummy!! Good luck getting rid of them.

Same thing happened to me a couple of years ago. Then, my Momma missed giving me my heartworm pill for a month and I caught the disease. The vet said that when Momma adopted me that I could have had a "false negative" on my very first heartworm test. My treatment cost Momma 795 of those green papers. I did really good with the treatment and had no side effects, and I'm just great now. So, hang in there little Barney (and your Mom too).

Sorry to hear about the heartworms Barney. My friend Gracie who is an english mastiff had heartworms and today she is cured and doing just fine. I hope treatment goes well and you are feeling well.

Barney was a stray before he adopted us in April, so who knows if he had medicine before he lived here...looks like no. He has been getting the monthly meds since April from me. I have been through this once before with Barkley, when I adopted him from the shelter. Thanks everyone for all of the supportive comments. It just knocked the wind out of my sails!! Why do they always do it at Christmas???

Oh, that is such bad news, and at Christmas time, too! With treatment he should be fine, but we're sorry you all have to go through that!

poor barney!!! i would definitely let your regular vet treat for this, or let them send you to a specialist. a long time ago, treatment and outcome for this was a very grim one, but veterinary medicine has come a loooong way. i've witnessed that this week with all the things on stuart! big hugs and prayers goin out to you and barney, and hopefully it is in the early stages. :)

Oh No! I hope your regular vet can do the treatment for a lower price. I'll be praying for you and Barney both. How stressful, right before Christmas!
