Future as a Therapy Dog?

Stevie on Behavior - Tue, December 11 2007

Teddy here speaking and not my mommy, Stevie. Anyway, I would just like to announce that in the future, I would like to be a therapy dog.

I'm a very confident puppy, outgoing, and comfortable in new situations--even if most dogs would think they are quite scary. I'm ALWAYS HAPPY TOO!

The other good thing is that I can actually sit still and I love cuddling on people's laps. Now, I can't say the same thing for my sister who's just as outgoing as me, because she is a serious wiggle worm, but that'll be fine for the show ring.

Based on this good behavior, mom would really like to see me used as a therapy dog for children or seniors as an adult. Given the right training and guidance to shape my behavior, combined with the fact that I am blessed with the perfect personality for the job--now, the key is just finding someone who wants a dog for that purpose! We did have someone that wanted me for the work last week, but unfortunatley it fell through.

I've already visited St. Vincent Pediatrics Hospital and I was a huge hit--granted, mom brought me in to show one of the nurses who "wanted me so bad" (not the same person I mentioned above). But, I got to go around to many of the kids and they all smiled at me and were so excited to see such a cute puppy dog who was so well behaved!

Pass the word along to your therapy friends or "working dog" friends--if they are potentially looking for a small therapy dog, I might be the perfect boy for them!

Are you registered with Therapy Dogs International? I think they actually provide places for you to go in your region. I could be wrong, but you should check out their website.

I think the dog already should have already passed his companion dog certification amongst other things--so it's for adult animals that are headed in that direction...I don't think it's for puppies that may be headed in that direction or that have the "potential" to be a therapy dog. That's why it would be great if someone really wanted a therapy dog and wanted to go through all the training, etc, to allow hiim to reach his full potential.
