Advice needed

Casey on Behavior - Sun, December 09 2007

Casey's Mom here. I need some advice on how to handle a neighbor that has a dog that's penned constantly. As I write this post, I can hear his mournful howls - he's been doing this since they left @ 8:00 a.m. this morning - it's now noon!

A little background - this couple has / had two Newfoundlands. They euthanized Nelson, a two / three ? year old yesterday. Agression was the reason. This past summer both dogs got out of their yard and attacked a woman walking her little min-pin. The woman was bitten as well as her dog. Thank God for the next door neighbors who rescued the 70 year old woman - the Newfies were circling her and getting ready to go in for the "kill". The incident was reported to the police but not much happened.

At that time, I tried to encourage the owners of the Newfies to exercise their animals. A tired puppy is a happy puppy and well behaved. I talked w/ the owner and said your dogs need to be excercised more - they are bored being in that pen for 12 - 14 hours a day. I suggested day care or a dog walker. Nothing happened.

Poor Henry is now in his cage howling, probably missing his brother. They leave this morning and haven't returned. That poor dog is sooo lonesome, and devestated by his loss I think.

Can any of you on Indy Paws think of something else I can do?

that is sad... is there a humane society or animal control officer you may be able to contact to ask for advise? I'm sure many others will have suggestions for you but I'm at a loss.. but I would feel horrible witnessing this too.

Animal control was out after the "incident" this summer. Nothing done since the dogs aren't being abused physically. I'll try calling tomorrow but I'm not real sure that they'll be able to do anything.

As big as Indy is, why do we not have an ASPC?? They would help. We are left with poor control unless, you want the dog to go down. We need to get the ASPC here in Indy.

i believe casey lives in new jersey. my advice is what everyone else says, try to contact AC, and do they have an ASPC in jersey? if so, i'd contact them. i know they do in states near NJ.

Thanks guys! I'll contact the local ASPCA here and AC. We'll see how tomorrow goes w/ the Newfie. They are actually very nice neighbors, I just think they need a little education.

Newfies are not by nature aggressive at all, so that should be a big red flag right there. Thanks for trying to do something about the situation for that poor guy.
