I'M MAKING A STRANGE NOISE

Rosie on Health - Fri, November 30 2007

Mom here: When I got home last night Rosie was making this strange noise. I'm wondering if it's what I've heard people calling a reverse sneeze. The noise is really hard to describe but I will try. When I see her do it it looks like she is maybe gasping because instead of pushing air out like a sneeze she looks as if she's taking it in suddenly. Not always, but sometimes, when she does it the sound is similar to a wheeze. She will do it several times and then quit and do it more later. This morning she woke me up doing it and she was in her crate. It is kind of like she has something stuck somewhere but I'm not sure really what it is. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Mom here...yep sounds familiar. When my oldest starts this up, it sounds like a wierd cross between a wheeze and a snore.

Wiggles does that too. It is scary the first time you hear it, but the vet has said it is normal.

All of my dogs have suffered from this at one time or another. Someone else on this board mentioned this same problem. It almost sounds like the dogs are having an asthma attack. They wheeze and hack. The first time one of my dogs did it, I was terribly afraid; but then, as I said, this has happened to every dog I have owned. It seems to last only seconds, and then they are fine. I wish I knew what it was, too.

Mom calls it "snarking" because that's what it sounds like. I do it pretty frequently, often when I am busy doing one thing and then start to bark or talk, and then I snark. I look pitiful, and she used to worry about it till the vet said it was normal and it would be self-limiting. He also said to put her hand lightly covering my nose and that would make it stop a little more quickly. I am always grateful when she does it, and it makes her feel a little better knowing that she might be helping. Even if she doesn't do it, it will stop on its own. It's not a indicator of breathing problems or future breathing problems, it's just something that some of us do. Rosie is a busy girl, so maybe that's why she snarks and the Basenjis don't.

Ojo does this more than Scouter. Almost like a hickup / gulp scenario? We do the same thing that Maddie suggested -- lightly hold the front of the snout but we also rub the chest. Helps calm my little jack - but nothing works too.

Thanks so much for the reassuring words. This is the 1st time it's happened since I got her in late Sept. and after being with my pet sitter for 5 days I was afraid she had eaten something she shouldn't have. Like a tin can!!!!!! I don't know where it was because I didn't see it until I returned from being gone for a short while. It was not really recognizable as some sort of pop can because it was in so many tiny shreds. You would think a metal pop can would be stronger than that. In my whole life I have never had a dog make that noise and it really has been freaking me out thinking about that can and the timing of her cough (or whatever it is). You have all really eased my mind and I'm so grateful. Kisses from Rosie & kisses to Skippy

My mom works for a pet sitting business here in Jersey and she has two French bulldogs that do this "snarking" (good word for it MM). Usually happens when they get too excited about going out to play!

Yeah, Waylon and I both do this sometimes. Seasonal allergies get to us at times and seem to make us do it more, you know, like when the pollen count is high. Mom gives us Benadryl with peanut butter when we are doing it alot and that seems to help.

Yes, it sounds very familiar. I make that sound every once in a while and it freaks mom out. She starts patting me on my back and it scares me a little. Mostly though she rubs my back and talks real quiet to me and it makes me stop. Mom thinks that it may be like doggy asthma. What do you all think?

Hello my Darling Rosie and Mom, Yes, we are well aware of that noise around here. My big sis, Sunyr does it sometimes. Mom said that the first time she did it, they took her to the vet, and they said it was a reverse sneeze, and that was years ago. She may do it two or three times in one day, and then not again for months. Kinda weird!! Nothing to be worried about though, from what they tell me. Have a wonderful weekend and hope to see you soon. Bye from little Skippy and Sunyr and of course, Mom.
